459th Bombardment Group
The 459th Bombardment Group was one of a number of B-24 Liberator groups assigned to the 15th Air Force flying out of Italy in 1944 and 1945. Based a Giulia Air Field the 459th BG a member of the 304th Bombardment Wing flew missions in Italy, France, the Balkans, Austria and Germany. From their time in theater they only had two commanders, Colonels Marden M. Munn and Henry K. Mooney.
The 459th Bombardment Group received a Distinguished Unit Citation for leading the 304th Wing through enemy interceptors and intense flak to raid an airfield and aircraft assembly plant at Bad Voslau on 23 April 1944.
The 459bg.org website seeks to preserve the history and honor the service of the men who served with the 459th Bombardment Group of World War II. If you can assist or provide information on anyone who was assigned to the 459th please contact us. We have a lot of the surviving group records, however these are an incomplete record so we need your help. Please contact us today.
