Blechhammer,Germany O-R 08/07/1944

Blechhammer, Germany missions were long, hard and exhausting for the flight crews. It usually meant 8 1/2 hours of flight in close formation with constant danger of plane collisions, enemy flak and fighters plus chances of running out of fuel.
A number of U S aircraft, once hit and damaged by flak or fighters, had to turn East and attempt to land in Russian controlled Poland or crashed on the return in German controlled Germany, Austria,Yugoslavia or Italy with the crews that survived becoming P O W`s.
Mission # 86 Oil Refinery 8-744 Mission No. 86 on 8-7-44 was a bombing mission way up north to Eastern Germany near the Polish Border to bomb the large Synthetic Oil Refinery`s Complex close to the notorious German Slave Labor Camps at Blechhammer, Germany and Oswecium, Poland. These missions were long 8 1/2 hour missions which tested the endurance of the U S flight crews and the fuel supplies of the B-24 planes.
