Charles Culpepper

Chuck Culpepper was a B-24 pilot who came to the 758th BS on 9-9-44 with his crew of Bob Brown,copilot; Reid Waltman, navigator; Bill Owen,Jr bombardier and 6 enlisted men listed elsewhere. Chuck finished up his combat tour of 35 sorties( 50 missions) in March of 1945 but elected to stay in the AAF in Europe and flew supply missions for a number of months even after VE Day 5-8-45.He served with the 327th Ferry Service Mediterranean Air Transport Squadron- APO 528. He, also, served with the CIA in Europe and flew C-47s into Berlin during the Berlin Airlift. He stayed in Federal Government until he retired. Chuck passed away in the year 2000, survived by at least one son, David L Culpepper, who resides in Virgina. Chuck was a great B-24 combat pilot and saved his crew`s lives a number of times with his skills and dedication. He and his crew trained for and flew a number of Solo Lone Wolf Night and Daylight Bad Weather Combat Missions during the bad winter of 1944-1945 when 15th Air Force Combat Formation Flying was not possible due to bad weather over the targets and/or at the Foggia Plains, Italy airfields. CHuck trained for Preflight at San Antonio,TX; Primary Stanfor, TX: Basic Greenveille AFB, TX: advanced, Fredrick,OK;and B-24 Transition at Ft. Worth, TX He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal w/ 3 Oak leaf Clusters, Service Laped Button WW II, EAME Campaign Medal w/ 7 Bronze Service Stars
