Marshall Hyman
Marshall Leonard Hyman, age 77, of Farragut, TN, formerly of Rochester, NY and Pittsford, NY, beloved father and grandfather, passed away Monday morning February 11, 2002 at his home.
Marshall was born April 12, 1924, in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating H S, and studying one year at City College of New York, entered the Military and served with distinction during WW II. Honorably discharged as 1st Lt, he completed 50 combat missions as a B-24 Co-pilot/Pilot, sharing the cockpit with his life-long devoted friend, Daniel Haiken, also from Brooklyn (now of Arizona) in the 757th Squadron, 459th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 15th Air Force, USAAF, based at Giulia, Italy. Awards included Unit Citation, Air Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster and 3 Battle Stars.
After the war, Marshall earned a B S in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1948, and then went to work at NACA (predecessor of NASA) in Cleveland, OH. In 1954 he began a career with Pfaudler Co of Rochester, NY; one of his earliest assignments was (then-classified) research on loan to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he met and married the former Vera McKinney, and began his family. Moving back to Rochester in late 1957 (and moving the family to Pittsford, NY in 1967), Marshall transferred to Nalge Co (Div. Of Sybron Corp., now Apogent Technology) in 1969, where he worked for 20 years, first as Vice President, then as President, and retiring as Chief Executive Officer in 1989. Served on Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) 1973-1983 (President 1975-1977).
In 1996 Marshall moved to Knoxville, TN to be close to his children and grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, David & Ida Brownstein Hyman, brother, Lt. Col. Robert Hyman (USAF, Ret.) and mother-in-law, Florence (McKinney) Hicks. Marshall is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Roger David and Elsa L. Hyman of Powell, TN; daughters, Helen (Hyman) Bethencourt and Janet Louise Hyman, both of Farragut, TN; grandchildren, Anne Marie Bethencourt, Cristina Alicia Hyman, Laura Marie Bethencourt and James Marshall Hyman; sister-in-law, Betty Hyman of New Hampshire; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, G. V. and Nancy McKinney of Oak Ridge, TN; nephews and nieces, Michelle Janes of Maine, David and Cmdr. Mark Hyman (USNR), both of Maryland, Daniel Hyman of New Hampshire, Arne Hyman of California, Steve McKinney of Murfreesboro, TN, Kathy Thomas of Oak Ridge, TN and Scott McKinney of Knoxville, TN.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Click Funeral Home in Farragut. . Wednesday at Click Funeral Home in Farragut. Family and friends will gather at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery with Chaplain Quentin Lockwood officiating with full military honors conferred by the East Tennessee Veteran Honor Guard.
