Clarence Loebel

Lt Clarence J Loebel`s crew photo of officers just before taking off to fly 459 BG`s Mission No. 191, Feburary 17, 1945 with a Primary target of Graz, Austria but due to weather they bombed Austetten, Austria that day. Several other 459 BG planes were forced to bomb alternate targets that day such as Bruck, Austria and the Plume Shipyard, Italy( now part of the old Yugoslavia ). No aircraft were lost that day on this mission.

Lt Clarence J Loebel was a 757th Bomb Squadron Navigator on Lt Ted Norman`s crew, the officers of this crew being Ted Norman,pilot; Mel Jayloff, co-pilot; Fran Powers, bombardier. This crew frequently flew in a B-24 H, named "Stormy Weather" serial number 41-28984.

Lt Loebel flew 31 Combat Missions, his first on 12-25-44 and his last on 4-26-45, the last mission that the 459th Bomb Group flew in the European War. He received the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the DFC.
