Fred Maguire


Fred L. Maguire Jr., 86, of 104 Old Hickory Road,Orange, MA died early on Thursday morning, April 16, 2009 at home, following an illness, with his family at his side.

Born in Shrewsbury on September 13, 1922, he was a son of Fred and Grace (Cox) Maguire Sr., and grew up in Shrewsbury. Fred was married to Ellen (Negus) on December 18, 1964 and they have enjoyed over 44 years together.

A veteran of World War Two, Fred enlisted into the United States Army on December 8, 1943 and was honorably discharged on September 3, 1945. He was a member of the 459th Bombardment Group as a nose gunner, and also a member of the 756th Bomb Squadron B-24-J, the "old Grey Wolf". A self employed businessman, he had owned and operated the former Fairlawn Motors on East Main Street in Orange, MA for 40 years, as well as owning, training, and racing harness horses at Hinsdale (NH), Foxoboro (MA), and Rochester (NY). He previously had worked at the former Evans Rambler dealership in Athol.

Besides his devotion to his family and passion for the horses, Fred also enjoyed deep sea fishing, playing cards, bingo, and golfing.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Ellen Maguire of Orange; a son, Fred L. Maguire III and his wife, Sue, of Orange; daughters, Robin Moberg of Mississippi, and Jennifer Drake of Orange; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Buccaroni, Luci Maguire, and Nicolas Drake; and great grandchildren, Vincent Buccaroni, Isabella Buccaroni, Lorenzo Buccaroni, and Rocco Buccaroni. There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 17, 2009 at St. Mary's Church, 19 Congress Street, Orange, at 2:00PM with Fr. Stephen Johnson of Our Lady Immaculate Church of Athol officiating. Interment will be private in Holtshire Cemetery, Orange. A Celebration of Fred's Life will also be held later this spring at a date and time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either to St. Mary's Church Endowment Fund, 19 Congress Street, Orange, MA 01364, the Athol Salvation Army, 107 Ridge Avenue, Athol, MA 01331, or to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, is directing the arrangements.
