Francis Medina
Sgt Francis Medina was the Tail Turret Gunner on Lt. Lionel Rambo's 756 BS crew. This crew, after flying on 8/27/44 in their regular ship, "Yankee Rebl", was supposed to have the day off next day but volunteered to fly a second 459 BG "Milk Run" mission that day, after the regular mission took of to bomb a railroad bridge in the Po Valley, North Italy. They drew a "Hanger Queen" a/c 44-41263, possibly named "Willy da Wabbit"? and ran into unexpected flak on the mission. The B-24 was hit in the left wing and bomb bay. All nine men(no Bombardier that day) bailed out and 8 men were captured. Francis Medina managed to escape capture and remained in the area for the rest of the war, which is the subject of his book " Ciao Francesco " The rest of the crew were interned at Stalag Luft 1 POW Camp at Barth, Germany and all survived the war.
Sgt Francis X Medina was assigned to the 459th BG 756th Squadron.
