This mission was part of the 15th Air Force`s early campaign to destroy the German fighter aircraft on the ground to reduce the number of German planes available to intercept the U S Bomber fleets Mission No. 43, 5-25-44, was directed at the Placenza Airdrome A-D in the Po River Valley of North Italy to destroy German aircraft on the ground with a large concentration of fragmentation ( frag ) bombs on runways, hangers and repair facilities.
