George Poye

Cpl. George Poye served in the 43rd Service Unit


George A. Poye, 87, of Ellsworth, died Friday, December 4, 2009 at his home.

He was born November 29, 1922 in Cokeburg, a son Michael Sr. and Barbara Tomljenovic Poye.

He attended grade school in Cokeburg and he was a 1940 graduate of Ellsworth High School.

He was a former coal miner and worked at several area mines. He later worked and retired from Babcock & Wilcox in Barberton, Ohio, as a laborer in the manufacturing plant.

Mr. Poye was a corporal in the U.S. Army and served during World War II and was a member of 459th Bomb Group Association, 15th Air Force Association, life member of VFW Firestone 3383 of Akron Ohio and the American Legion Post 165 of Bentleyville.

He was a member of Ave Maria Parish and the Croatian Fraternal Union of Cokeburg.

He was an avid stamp collector.

Mr. Poye was the last of his immediate family.

Surviving are a nephew Michael Poye III of Cokeburg; a niece Carolyn Rainey of Florida; uncle and aunt, Victor and Virginia Thomas of Scenery Hill; and dear friend with whom he made his home with, Rose Teluch of Ellsworth.

Deceased are his wife, Elsie Irene Werle Poye and two brothers, Michael Poye Jr. and Emil D. Poye.

Friends welcome from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville (724-239-2255), where a prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 9, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at Ave Maria Church, Bentleyville, with Rev. Gary W. Krummert, officiating. Interment will follow in Scenery Hill Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 165, Bentleyville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ave Maria Parish, 126 Church St., Bentleyville, PA 15314. The Ave Maria Parish Women's Guild will pray the rosary at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
