Leon Sample
Dewey Sample Jr., 86, of Sioux City, passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at a local hospital comforted by family. Abiding by his wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. R. Paul Johnston officiating. Visitation will be this 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Dewey was born on Dec. 9, 1923, in Sioux City, to Dewey and Alma (Sundquist) Sample Sr. He received his education in the Sioux City Public Schools before enrolling at Iowa State University in 1941. Dewey interrupted his education to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S Army Air Corps in 1942 during World War II. He served as a bombardier with the 15th Air Force stationed in Italy. Dewey received the Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross while in the service. He received his honorable discharge in 1945. Dewey completed his education, receiving his bachelors of arts degree from the University of Nebraska in 1948. He married Janet Bohl on March 12, 1949, in Sioux City. Dewey started his career with Postal Finance Company, working his way from training, to branch manager, to supervisor, and finally served as the senior vice president before retiring in 1982, after 32 years of service. Dewey continued to work selling real estate with First Realty until 1986. Dewey was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a member of Landmark Masonic Lodge 103, the Sioux City Scottish Rite, and the Abu Bekr Shrine. He enjoyed his membership to the Sioux City Boat Club, the Sioux City Country Club, where he served two terms as a board member, and the 459th Bomb Group Association. Dewey is survived by his wife, Jan of Sioux City; daughters, Sandy Skelton and her husband, Denny of Alamogordo, N.M., and Debi Heaton and her husband, Ron of Sioux City; grandchildren, Amy Skelton of Wyoming, D.J. Skelton of Washington, D.C., Corey Heaton and his wife, Staci of Sioux City, and Brett "Spud" Heaton and his wife, Sadie of Sioux City; and great-grandchildren Bryce, Luke, Tristan, Kylee, and Maddyx. Dewey was preceded in death by his parents.
