Lowell Smestad
Lowell Smestad entered the service in March 1943. His basic training was in Santa Ana, CA. He took additional training in Fresno, CA. He was also in Siouc Falls, SD.; Laredo and Eagle Pass, TX; Salt Lake City and Kearns, UT; Capser, WY; Topeka, KS; Camp Henry and Newport News, VA; Camp McCoy, WI; and Tamp, FL. His overseas tour of duty included stints in North Africa and Italy. He served as a radio operator and gunner on B-24's and saw action in several combat missions in the Balkans, Central Europe, Po Valley, and the Rhineland. He was wounded 20,000ft over Europe. He was awarded five Battle Stars, the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart.
