Lloyd Smiley

Lloyd G. Smiley Crew: Pilot Lloyd Smiley, Copilot Dick Dent, Navigator Don Marler, Bombardier Leonard Roberts, Flight Engineer Norman Prouty, Radio Operator Dick Clark, Assistant Armorer Fran Virostek, Armorer Tom Lusk, Assistant Radio Paul Schroeder, Assistant Engineer Joe Boudart.

Flew new B-24 from Topeka to Manchester, Gander, Azores, Marrakech, Tunis, Gioia and Cherignola. (Arrived October 1944 and flew back to the US late Spring 1945; reassigned to Hondo, Texas for B-29 transition and war with Japan ended.)

759th Squadron Commander Major Jollisaint thanked us for the new aircraft. We flew only 18 missions and the war was over in Europe. Promoted to 1st Lt. after 15 missions. March 1, 1945 mission experienced some losses, shot up badly, fuel and oxygen lost, and landed safely on small airfield, Zara, Yugoslavia, for repairs and refueling.

There are only two of us alive: Virostek and myself. I enjoy good health at the age of 86; play tennis competitively. God has blessed our marriage of 62 years. Connie, my wife, graduated Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and served 53 years as administrative RN; met in Boston while in school and graduated MIT June 1951.
