AWARD OF DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS MISSING IN ACTION PHILLIP S. WOOD, O-24755, First Lieutenant, 757th Bomb Sq. 459th Gp. For extraordary achievement in aerial flight as pilot of a B-24 type aircraft. On 2 March 1944, Lt. Wood led a formation against highly important and strategic enemy installations in Italy. Through superior leadership, coordination and maintenance of strict flight discipline, he brought the entire formation through heavy enemy opposition by fighter aircraft and severe and adverse weather conditions for a highly successful bombing run which caused damage to be inflicted on the assigned objective. Through the use of exceptionally efficient combat tactics, Lt. Wood accomplished this difficult and hazardous assignment without any loss to his formation. By his outstanding airmanship, courageous leadership and devotion to duty, as evidenced throughout his combat career, Lt. Wood has upheld the highest traditions of the Military Service, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
