Albert Kahn

2nd Lt Albert Kahn

See V-Mail letter sent home for Christmas 1944 below

1st Lt. Alfred "Allie" Kahn was a KIA on a mission on Feb. 28, 1945

Albert enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 3 Sept 1942. He was later commissioned and completed flight training at Chatham Field, GA. He became a co-pilot of B-24 bombers and went overseas in March 1944. He was assigned to the 759th Bomb Squadron, 459th Bomb Group, 304th Bomb Wing, 15th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Corps. His squadron was based at the airfield near Giulia, Italy. He was killed in action while on a bombing mission, the targets of which were the Iscaro railroad bridge and Vicenza railroad marshaling yards in northern Italy. He was on his 35th mission, his last before he would have been sent home. He was buried at the U.S. military cemetary in Bari, Italy. After the war his remains were brought home and re-buried at the Temple Beth-El Cemetery in Asbury Park, NJ.

Frank Hollingshead writes:

My mother, Dorothy Cohen Hollingshead, was Lt. Kahn's cousin. He spent a lot of time at her house, and was especially close her father, "Allie's" uncle, Leon Cohen. He taught Allie how to drive, and Allie was sort of the son her father never had (he had three girls). The whole family was devastated by Allie's death, and my mother says her father was never the same during the subsequent four years before his own death.

I made a framed "shadow box" which contains the medals Allie was awarded, a pair of WW2 Army pilots wings and 1st Lt bars, some photos and an engraved plaque. This has a place of honor in my home, and I have told my children about him in the hopes of preserving the memory of Allie within our family, and to honor the many like him that sacrificed so much for us all. May we always be grateful for, and never forget, all of those young men who died too young fighting the evil that was Nazi Germany.

I would be grateful to hear from any 759th Bomb Squadron veteran who knew 1st Lt. Alfred "Allie" Kahn, who served as a co-pilot in the 759th from March 1944 until killed in action on 28 Feb 1945. Any crew photos, stories, or anything else would be greatly appreciated by his family. Thanks.

Frank Hollingshead
