The next to last mission the 459 BG was to fly in WW II was Mission No.241 to the important railroad hub of Linz, in Nothern Austria along the Blue Danube River. Linz had always been a prime 15th A F target because of its transportation facilities, both road, railroad and river traffic,to move military supplies thru its facilities to supply the German Eastern Front and Italy Armies.
As such, Linz was always heavily defended by German flak batteries. Linz ranked third in German defended cities just behind Munich, Germany and Vienna, Austria.
459 B G Mission No. 241 to th Linz North Main M-Y turned out to be the next to last combat mission the 459th B G was to fly in WW II. The final mission, No.242 to Tarvissio, Italy, the next day, 4-26-45 ended the combat missions for the 459 BG as the German Armies were in full retreat and there were no more important targets for the heavy bombers of the 15th AF. The war in Europe was soon to be over on May 8, 1945 Linz, Austria, had always been a highly defended German city and had been hit several times by the 459 BG so that the Squadrons of the 459 BG were glad to have the war in Europe end soon after this mission.
